چکیده

Consider a drawing of a graph G in the plane such that crossing edges are coloured differently. The minimum number of colours, taken over all drawings of G, is the classical graph parameter thickness. By restricting the edges to be straight, we obtain the geometric thickness. By additionally restricting the vertices to be in convex position, we obtain the book thickness. This paper studies the relationship between these parameters and treewidth. Our first main result states that for graphs of treewidth k, the maximum thickness and the maximum geometric thickness both equal dk/2e. This says that the lower bound for thickness can be matched by an upper bound, even in the more restrictive geometric setting. Our second main result states that for graphs of treewidth k, the maximum book thickness equals k if k ≤ 2 and equals k + 1 if k ≥ 3. This refutes a conjecture of Ganley and Heath [Discrete Appl. Math. 109(3):215–221, 2001]. Analogous results are proved for outerthickness, arboricity, and star-arboricity. ? On the treewidth and related parameters of random geometric graphs

We give asymptotically exact values for the treewidth tw(G) of a random geometric graph G(n, r) in [0, √ n]. More precisely, we show that there exists some c1 > 0, such that for any constant 0 < r < c1, tw(G) = Θ( logn log logn ), and also, there exists some c2 > c1, such that for any r = r(n) ≥ c2, tw(G) = Θ(r √ n). Our proofs show that for the corresponding values of r the same asymptotic bou...

Graph Theoretical Problems in Next-Generation Chip Design

A major component of computer chip design is creating an optimal physical layout of a netlist, i.e., determining where to place the functional elements and how to route the wires connecting them when manufacturing a chip. Because of its basic structure, the overall problem of netlist layout contains many questions that lend themselves to graph theoretical modeling and analysis. We will describe...

On Treewidth and Related Parameters of Random Geometric Graphs

We give asymptotically exact values for the treewidth tw(G) of a random geometric graph G ∈ G(n, r) in [0, √ n]. More precisely, let rc denote the threshold radius for the appearance of the giant component in G(n, r). We then show that for any constant 0 < r < rc, tw(G) = Θ( logn log logn ), and for c being sufficiently large, and r = r(n) ≥ c, tw(G) = Θ(r √ n). Our proofs show that for the cor...

On the treewidth of triangulated 3-manifolds

In graph theory, as well as in 3-manifold topology, there exist several width-type parameters to describe how “simple” or “thin” a given graph or 3-manifold is. These parameters, such as pathwidth or treewidth for graphs, or the concept of thin position for 3-manifolds, play an important role when studying algorithmic problems; in particular, there is a variety of problems in computational 3-ma...
